A few days ago I took a spiritual gifts test. My top gift is: Faith. I did some online research to try and find out what exactly that gift entails. To better describe, or flesh-out what the gift is, I’ll share a story.
At age 38 I felt the call to find a wife. During a time of seeking God and fasting, I came up with a 30 point list of qualities I was looking for in a future bride. 30? Yes, pretty crazy. Some of the points:
1. She must be Saved
2. Worship with her arms raised
3. Loves God and puts Him first
4. Must be +/- 5 years of my age
5. Must get my sense of humor
6. Must not have kids
7. Must have a college education
30. 5’10” tall
This list served three purposes:
1. So that I’d search within myself to figure out what kind of man I was and the kind of man God wants me to be.
2. To prove to myself and others how generous and awesome our God is.
3. God does provide.
God provided me a bride that met all of those criteria, except she is only 5’3″ tall.
While making this list, I trusted that God would put the right desires on my heart, and that He would fulfill those desires. “Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart.” – Psalm 37:4
I also focused on: “Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.”” – Genesis 2:18
All glory be to God. He has provided me with a beautiful bride and an excellent daughter. From the get-go, my bride and I chose to honor Him by not kissing (and not invite temptation) until the Pastor said, “you may kiss your bride”.
To sum it up, I’d have to say that the gift of Faith is: Believing that God will provide, that He will take care of us like the loving Father He is, and that He will do what He says in the Bible.
I think of the old hymn: “Standing on the Promises” and ask you, what if you stood on His promises? What are His promises?
Seek Him to find out.
